Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
The dedication of this single window suggests that it was donated by the surviving men of the HMAS Voyager in tribute to their mates. The window shows a Naval helicopter, hovering over an empty lifeboat, a vivid picture of rescue at sea, and two images of gallantry awards for saving lives at sea. The battle honours of the ship were noted in the window: Libya 1940-41, Greece 1941, Mediterranean 1941, Calabria 1940, Southwest Pacific 1942, Crete 1941 and Timor 1942.
The ship began its life in 1918 when it was launched as a W Class destroyer in the Royal Navy. Transferred to the RAN in 1933, it served in peacetime until its recommissioning and commencement on operations in January 1940. It entered the Mediterranean, working as a convoy escort, supplying Crete, supporting the LIbyan campaign and becoming a part of the Tobruk Ferry Service. Recalled to the Pacific, the ship was grounded in uncharted waters off the coast of Japanese-occupied Timor while attempting to land supplies and reinforcements for Australian commandos on 23 September 1942. All men were evacuated without casualty.
