Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
The single light window is described in the guide to the stained glass in the Chapel of St. Mark as a 'Memorial to those killed in action in HMAS Hobart, given by the members of the Ex-Hobart Association'. The dominating figure of St. Andrew, denoted by the saltire cross in his nimbus, was attended by two small angels placed at his feet and at each side of the insignia of HMAS Hobart. The ship was named after the Tasmanian capital and below the insignia is the City of Hobart's motto: 'Sic Fortis Hobartia Crevit' ('Thus Gallant Hobart Grew', alsothe motto of Hobart II launched in 1968).
HMAS Hobart was a modified Leander-class light cruiser commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy in 1938. During the Second World War she saw service from Bass Strait initially to several major theatres of war and received battle honours for action in the East Indies 1940, Mediterranean 1941, Indian Ocean 1941, Coral Sea 1942, Savo Island 1942, Gualcanal 1942, Pacific 1942-45 and Borneo 1945. On 20 July 1943, HMAS Hobart was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while in the Solomon Islands and fourteen lives were lost. She was repaired at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney and in 1945 returned to take part in landings at Tarakan, Brunei and Balikpan before proceeding to Tokyo in time for VJ Day in September.
