Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Inscription
Plaque: This window was dedicated to the Glory of God and to commemorate the Women who served in the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service during World War II. It was presented to the Chapel of St. Mark by the early Post-War II WRANS in 1954. This thoughtfulness was noted by a group of WWII Ex-Servicewomen in the Diamond Jubille of the Wartime Women's Services 1941-2001.
Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
St. Michael was the central light of this group of three installed in the south chapel wall. The window was already designed by David Taylor Kellock (1913-1988) when announcements concerning the building of a new chapel at the Flinders Naval Depot were made in August 1952. A 'thumbnail' sketch of the design that appeared in the Argus and few changes were made during its transition into the completed window. Scrolls at the base of the window, placed at either side of 'WRANS' symbol contain the names of where the women served: Herron[?] Rushcutter Watson Larsdale Melville Magnetic Huon Kuttabul Penguin Minderi Torrens Moreton Kuranda Cerberus Monterey. Women did not serve at sea until 1983.
