Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
Despite the generous response to appeals for memorials to HMAS Sydney (£850) and Perth (£450) a tribute to HMAS Canberra had reportedly only raised £1 by May 1953, a disappointment to the funds manager, Chaplain, the Reverend Herbert E Fawell, who was unable to generate interest in the memorial. A year later the United States Ambassador, Mr. Amos Peaslee presented a cheque for £75 to the president of the Canberra Ex-Naval Men's Association for the window. The funds were the proceeds of an exhibition baseball game between sailors on the warships Tarawa and O'Bannon when they were in Australia for the Coral Sea celebrations. The balancewas soon forthcomingand the window was expected to be completed by August 1954.
Architect, Louis R Williams, used the rose window as a regular feature of his church designs. Unlike the curvilinear tracery example in the east end, the tracery for the south chapel followed a more traditional format. Both rose windows were based on symbolic designs, in contrast to the nave windows where stained glass artist,David Taylor Kellock (1913-1988) used figurative designs in thenave windows to commemorate the ships and men of the Australian fleet.
HMAS Canberra, named for Australia's capital, was a heavy cruiser of the Kent sub-class of County class cruiser. Built in Scotland in the late 1920s, during the Second World War she plied the Indian Ocean between Ceylon, South Africa and Australia before being reassigned to convoy duties around New Guinea and the Pacific region. During the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942, she was badly damaged before a decision to evacuate before being sunk by United States Navy destroyers.
