    Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History

    This, the left-hand light of a three-light window, was dedicated to 'HMAS Australia, heavy cruiser of 10,000 tons and oft times Flagship of the Australian fleet. Served from 1928 to 1955. In World War II she earned eight battle honours' as noted in the window: 'Atlantic 1940-41, Pacific 1941-43, Coral Sea 1942, Savo Island 1942, Guadalcanal 1942, New Guinea 1942-44, Leyte Gulf 1944 [and] Lingayen 1945'.

    At the top of the window the artist has placed a small image of the cross, with the insignia of HMAS Australia including its motto, 'Endeavour', below. Two images of the ship were inserted, each displaying the camouflage profiles in different theatres of war and at different times - 1939-1942 and 1942-1945. As well as the dedicatory plaque, an inscription in the window reads: 'Dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of the 87 men of HMAS Australia who lost their lives in World War II, and all who served in her'.
